STARKVILLE — Laurin MacLennan “Coach, Spook or Larry” Scales, 78, died Oct. 20, 2018, at the Choctaw Regional Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ackerman. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Welch Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oddfellows cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to services at the funeral home. Welch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Scales was born Oct. 7, 1940, in Andalusia, Alabama, to the late Walter Webb “Coach Juicy” Scales and Mary Olive “Spec” Scales. He was a graduate of Starkville High School and a 1965 and 1968 graduate of Mississippi State University. He served in the Naval Reserve and the National Guard. He was formerly employed as a teacher in Belle Grade, Florida and Starkville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Sidney Scales. He is survived by his wife, Catherine L. Scales; daughters, Mary Catherine Parish of Ackerman and Joanna Marie Brockhoff of Slidell, Louisiana; sisters, Bonnibel Byars, Olive Celeste Woods and Mary Ann Reese; and four grandchildren.
