SMITHVILLE — Julia Ray Dabbs Bowen, 90, died May 29, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Services are today at 3:30 p.m. at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Smithville with Lloyd Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Young Memorial Gardens. Visitation is today from noon until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Bowen was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Hatley to the late Lemuel and Mary Fuqua Dabbs. She lived in Detroit for 17 years before returning to the Hatley/Smithville area. She was a homemaker and a member of Smithville Baptist Church and worked in the Smithville School cafeteria for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ruble Bowen; daughter, Peggy Moore; sisters, Minnie Lee Jones, Winona Hill, Emma Palmer, Annabell Evans, and Loucille Welch; brothers, Austin, Houston, Burley and Moses Dabbs; one grandson and one great-grandson. She is survived by her sons, Hoyt Bowen, of Scottsboro, Ala., and Norman Bowen, of Tupelo; sister, Celia Fay Jackson, of Smithville; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Van Dabbs, F.B. Boozer, Lamar Minor, Jerry Lee Frederick, Joe Hal Morgan and Loyd Pearson.
