PICKENS — The Rev. John C. Hayes, 84, died June 28, 2009, at Pickens County Hospital in Alabama. Services are Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lee-Sykes Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus, with the Rev. James Gillespie officiating. Visitation is today from noon-5 p.m. at Lee Sykes Funeral Home in Columbus. Burial will follow at Sardis C.M.E. Cemetery Mr. Hayes was born July 17, 1924, in Jackson, Tenn., to the late Johnnie Hayes and Shadie J. Hayes. He was a preacher and teacher at Bush Mill Elementary School, in Prairie Point. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wardell Hayes Sr., Henry and Carl R. Hayes; and sister, Ruth H. Cannon. He is survived by his sister, Vera H. Dent. Pallbearers are Bernard Johnson, Rodney, William, Anthony, Willie J. and James Hayes, John, Earnest and Jesse Sanders.
