John Gavin

John Gavin, 89, died March 14, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hosptial–Golden Triangle. Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Friendship MB Church with the Rev. Jason Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens in Columbus. Visitation is today from 3-8 p.m. at Carter’s Funeral Services of Columbus. Mr. Gavin was born June 19, 1919, in Bigbee Valley to the late John Henry Gavin and Sarah Graham Gavin. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Friendship MB Church, where he formerly served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and was on the Deacon Board. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Leola Richardson and Beatrice Moore. He is survived by his wife, Annie Laura Gavin of Columbus; sons, Jeffery Stewart of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Bobby Stewart of Columbus and Johnny Stewart of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; daughters, Betty Venable of New Brunswick, N.J., and Nell Stewart and Bobbie Jean Little, both of Columbus; and three grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Cedrick and Herbert Jones, Eddie Jethrow, Johnny Henderson, Issac Moore and Carl Gardner.
