Mr. James Edward Spain, age 82, of Albertville, Alabama surrendered to his Higher Power Wednesday, May 19, 2010 surrounded by family and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010, 2:00 p.m. at McRae Chapel. McRae Funeral Home, Boaz is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Spain was born in Mississippi on June 6, 1927 to Thomas A. & Annie Ree Smith Spain. Mr. Spain recently celebrated a life of 50 years of sobriety as a long standing member of Alcoholics Anonymous. As an inductee in the Senior Poker Players Hall of Fame “Gentleman Jim” was also a world classed and respected well known poker player placing 4th in the 1987 famed World Series of Poker as well as placing in other WSOP events and many poker tournaments all over the world. He will be remembered as an inspiration to all who met him throughout his life. Mr. Spain is survived by his beloved sons: Tommy Spain of Hickory, NC and Duke Spain of Albertville, AL. He was “Papa” to his grandchildren: Adria Spain of Cullman, AL, True Spain of Acworth, GA, and Nikita Spain & Mila Spain both of Hickory, NC, and great grandchildren: Karlie & Will Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife: Shirley “Sam” McDonald Spain, Son: Jimmy Spain and Brother: Thomas A.
