James “Jim” Milton Hemby, Jr. age 68, died Friday, October 12, 2012, at his residence in Columbus, MS. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Butler and Rev. Charles Mullins officiating. Visitation will follow at the Church. Mr. Hemby was born in Columbus, MS on September 13, 1944, to Merle Shelton Hemby and the late James Milton Hemby, Sr. Mr. Hemby was a 1962 graduate of S.D. Lee High School. He was in the grocery business for many years having worked in his family’s business, Hemby’s Grocery as well as Big Star and Jitney Jungle. He also worked at Hardin’s Bakery, Northington Snacks and for Shelton Cleaners for a while. Jim was an accomplished musician and could play anything with strings or wind. He played in the band Fifth Reich and loved music. He also enjoyed bow hunting, fishing and was also a motorcycle enthusiast. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Milton Hemby, Sr. and his brother, Phillip N. Hemby. Jim is survived by his wife, Alice F. Perkins Hemby of Columbus, MS; mother, Merle Shelton Hemby of Columbus, MS; aunt, Jackie Williams of Columbus, MS; mother-in-law & father-in-law, Dean & K.C. Threet of Columbus, MS; sister’s-in-law, Debra Hemby of Columbus, MS and Pam Valentine of IL; brother’s -in-law, Garrett Valentine of IL and Dave Harper of Columbus, MS; nieces, April Hemby and Marlena Valentine; nephews, Derrick Ridgeway and Guy Valentine as well as several cousins. Honorary Pallbearers will be: K.C. Threet, Terry Youngblood, Gerry Moore, Tommy Sanders, Johnny Wayne Atkins, R.C.
