AMORY — Joseph Eugene Walter “J.R.” Thompson Jr., 77, died Feb. 27, 2009, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center–Amory. Memorial services will be at a later date. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Thompson was born July 22, 1931, in Key West, Fla., to the late Joseph Eugene Sr. and Louise Alberry Thompson. He lived in Tavernier, Fla., Miami, and in Smithville for two years. He retired from commercial fishing. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 40 years. He is survived by his son, Joe Thompson of Smithville; daughter, Dee Varian of Smithville; sisters, Lois Floyd and Ethel Laden, both of Miami; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
