Howard graduated Castle Heights Military Academy, Lebanon, TN, and attended Mississippi State College where he graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1959. He was a member of the Beta Tau Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order for which he was admitted to the KA Court of Honor in 1988. Howard also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Howard married Doris Johnson Barrett of Indianola on December 20, 1959. The couple moved to Columbus, MS, where he began farming. In 1963, Howard joined Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent and later became Agency Manager. He worked with Farm Bureau for 41 years while also owning and operating a soybean and cattle farm in Lowndes County. Howard loved to share the joys of the family farm. Whether he was hosting friends for a hunt or teaching the little ones how to fish and open the gates, he was happiest riding around the land of Evandale. He was also an avid MSU sports fan and when he was not at the Junction, the Hump or Dudy Noble enjoying visiting with friends, he was listening or watching on game day. Howard was involved in many church and civic activities. As a member of First United Methodist Church he served on various committees, was a member of the Ivy Sunday School class and enjoyed volunteering with the church’s Loaves and Fishes. Howard was a longtime member of the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, the Lowndes County 4-H Council, a member of the MS Senior Services Board, Kiwanis Club and served several terms on the board of Heritage Academy where he also served as Board President.
