Horace A. Stokes
Horace Alston Stokes, age 82, of Columbus, MS died February 11, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 14, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Dr. Gene Gillis officiating. The interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Friday, February 13, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mr. Stokes was born August 30, 1926 in Steens, MS to the late Ferris L. and Rennie Colvin Stokes. He was a graduate of New Hope High School and veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army. Mr. Stokes was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he also received his masters degree. He was a teacher in various places before retiring in 1980 after living in Pinellas County, FL for over fourty years. Mr. Stokes was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Stokes is survived by his wife, Lillie Blaxton Stokes, sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Ruthann Stokes and Steve and Lauren Stokes, all of Columbus, brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Martha Stokes of Anniston, AL, and grandchildren, Joshua and Mandi Stokes of Columbus. Pallbearers will be Ron Ray, Richie Brantley, Howard Knight, Clayton James, Herbert Junkin, and David Blaxton. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church 1383 Pleasant Hill Rd.
