Ruby Evelyn East, age 80, died November 20, 2018, at her residence in Columbus, MS. Services will be held at Covenant United Methodist Church on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Gene Bramlett and Reverend Paul McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Curtis Chapel Cemetery in Oktibbeha County. Visitation will be held at the church from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM immediately prior to the funeral. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory, 2nd Ave. North location has been entrusted with the arrangements. Mrs. East was born on November 28, 1937, in Crawford, MS, to the late Talton N. and Sammie A. Thompson. She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Brooksville High School and Draughon’s Business College. Though her primary role was being a homemaker, she also worked at American Bosch and T.E. Lott & Company. In addition to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. East treasured her extended family, including her siblings and her many nieces and nephews. Throughout her life, she got her greatest joy from serving other people, including volunteering at church and school functions, visiting the sick and elderly, and serving as a host family for international students at MUW. She was also a volunteer with Contact Helpline, a crisis hotline, where she also served as scheduling coordinator. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Thompson, T.N. Thompson, Jr., Carlton Thompson, Jerry Thompson and W.G. “Bit” Thompson; her sisters, Dora Von Kanel, Bonnie Cooper and Jean Ervin. Survivors include her husband, John East of Columbus, MS; sons, Warren East (Priscilla) and David East (Deborah) of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Peyton, Alex, Madeline, Stephen, Avery and Addison East. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Peyton, Alex and Stephen East; her nephews, Butch, Grady and James Thompson; and her great-nephews, Trey and Russell Freeman. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Cameron Huxford, Dr. Brett Brown, Rex Swedenburg, L.C. McGee, Bob Herron, Sammie Townsend and the Pathfinder’s Sunday School Class.
