On Thursday, November 14, 1929, in the Liberty Community of Pickens County, Alabama, the Lord blessed Edward “Ed” Preston Pate and his wife, Crecie McAdams Pate, with their fifth child, a daughter who they named Eloise. Eloise was welcomed by her oldest brother, Pirvie Laron, her oldest sister, Geather, sister, Mary Evelyn “Jack”, and her brother Edward Deon “Buck” Pate. Three years and 8 months later, Eloise welcomed her baby sister, Jimmie Doris. Eloise attended Liberty High School where she was a member of the Girls’ Basketball Team. And while growing up in the Liberty Community she attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church and Liberty Assembly of God. She had a beautiful alto voice. She and her sister, “Jack” would sing duets at church. Eloise married Woodrow Winford Robertson on October 6, 1945. To this union her beloved children, Larry Edward Robertson and Patsy Ruth Robertson, were born. After marrying, she joined Springhill Baptist Church, Millport, AL. Eloise was known for her “can-do” attitude and independent spirit. She believed in a woman knowing how to do things for herself. Eloise knew how to check the fluid level in her automobiles, lawn mowers, check tire pressure, and pump her own gas. If something needed to be done, she would attempt it, and was usually successful. She even climbed onto the top of her house to sweep the roof. Eloise loved caring for her flowers and shrubs, and she took pride in having a beautiful yard. She did her own mowing and weed-eating until the last three years of her life. In addition to enjoying working in her yard, Eloise enjoyed watching Alabama Football and loved Southern Gospel Music. She had a great compassion for animals, especially her cats Twinkle, Bo, and Boots. But she loved her children and grandchildren more than anything in this world. Eloise took pride in doing her best at everything she did. She was a hard worker who got up at 4:30 every morning for 38 years to cook breakfast for her family and go to work on the assembly line at American Bosch/United Technologies. Eloise never complained about working. She felt it was a blessing, and she enjoyed working. Many times she quoted her Springhill B. C. Ladies Sunday School teacher, Miss Nannie Vail as saying, “Instead of complaining that you have to get up to go to work, just thank the Lord that you are able to put your feet on the floor”. Eloise made many life-long friends at UT because she was a true friend who was loyal and never gossiped about anyone. Eloise was no stranger to sorrow. Her dear mother, Crecie, died when Eloise was only seven years. She always said the only parent she knew was her Daddy because she could not remember her mother and never knew any of her grandparents.
