Elizabeth Windham Ellenburg, age 101, died March 6, 2009, at Homeplace of Columbus. Funeral services will be Sunday, March 15, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. A private interment will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, March 14, 2009, from 4:00-6:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mrs. Ellenburg was born November 19, 1907, in Gordo, AL, to the late James Henry and Velma Clanton Windham, Sr. She worked for many years at various places including the Garment Plant, Ruth’s Shop, Egger’s Department Store, T. G. Owen Florist, Columbus Marble Works, Wichman Monument Company, and Graham Tire and Trim Supply Company, from which she retired in 1973. Mrs. Ellenburg was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she worked in the Toddler Nursery, was a Weekly Bulletin Volunteer, and was the “Sunshine Chairman” of the Shalles Sunday School Class. She was recognized as an Honorary Golden Girl at the Mississippi University for Women, and she was known as the “Cake Lady”, baking and giving away countless cakes. Mrs. Ellenburg was preceded in death by her husband, Coker Phillip Ellenburg, brother, Jimmy Windham, and sister, Kate Hill Wichman. She leaves behind her pet poodle, Mollie. Mrs. Ellenburg is survived by nieces, Sandra Wichman Ourth of Chattanooga, TN, and Judy Windham (Steve) Cockerham of Columbus; nephews, Fred W. Wichman and Phil (Janice) Windham of Chattanooga, TN, and John (Janet) Windham of Alexandria, KY; sister-in-law, Vallie W. Windham of Columbus; great-nieces, Elizabeth Britain (William) Nichols of San Antonio, TX, and Teri Reneau of Chattanooga, TN; great-nephews, Rick Wichman and Ashley Windham of Chattanooga, TN and Grant Cockerham of Starkville, MS; great-great-nephews, Travis and Trent Wichman; Conner, Weston, and Reagan Nichols. Honorary pallbearers will be Ellis Atkins, Frank Griffin, Charles Gilliam, Charlie Holcomb, Vic Lancaster, Steve McEwen, Bro. Johnny Presley, Darrel Pulliam, Geoge Shalles, Clyde Stokes, Jr., Dave Studdard, and Boyd Sullivan. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church (Love Indeed) P.O. Box 829, Columbus, MS 39703.
