MACON — Charles L. Staten, 88, died March 24, 2009, at Rush Foundation Hospital–Meridian. Services are Monday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Macon with Dr. Bill Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery in Okolona. Visitation is Monday from 12:30-2 p.m. at the church. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Staten was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Pyland to the late Eddie and Ora Thomas Staten. He lived in Van Vleet where he attended school. He worked a short time at Gulf Ordinance Plant at the beginning of World War II before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in which he served in the Sixth Division of 22nd Regiment. He fought in the Battles of Guam and Okinawa and then was sent to China. He left home in 1943 and returned in 1946. He then worked with Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, working in several locations around the state until he was stationed in Macon in 1946. He became inspector of Meridian District of MHP and retired in 1980. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Macon and was a member of Agogo Sunday School Class. He was a Mason, and a member of Jolly 20 Club, Magnolia Club and served many years as vice president of Retired Mississippi Highway Patrolman’s Association. He was a member of G.H. Vaughn Marine Corps League and Marine Corps Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles David Staten; sister, Laverne Cook; and brothers, Winfred, Avis and Glen Staten. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Staten of Macon; daughter, Sue Stokes of Dekalb; son, Edward Staten of Inverness, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
