STARKVILLE — Charles D. Lowery, 81, died Jan. 12, 2019, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. A celebration of life service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church with a reception immediately following. Welch Funeral Home in Starkville is entrusted with arrangements. Dr. Lowery was born May 8, 1937, in Greeneville, Alabama. He he graduated in 1955 from Sidney Lanier High School; and he received a bachelor’s in English from Huntingdon College, a master’s from Florida State University in and a PhD from the University of Virginia, where he was a Thomas Jefferson Scholar. He was formerly employed as a professor of history at Mississippi State University and served in various leadership positions, including Head of the History Department, Director of the Institute for the Humanities and Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences. Charles was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and board member of College Choice Foundation He was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben and Frances Lowery; brothers, Dan and Harvey Lowery; and sister, Matt Lowery Bryan. He is survived by his wife, Sara Bradford Lowery; sons, Tom Lowery of Gainesville, Florida, Trent Lowery and Dan Lowery, both of Birmingham, Alabama; sister, Frances Poeppelmeir of Dadeville, Alabama; and 10 grandchildren.
