Bura Junkin

Bura Clinton Junkin, age 90, died on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS. Visitation was held Sunday, September 30, 2012, from 6 – 8 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Columbus, MS at 10 AM on Monday, October 1, 2012, with Rev. Steve Lammons, officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. B.C. was born to the late James Harvey and Lovie Bell Sullivan Junkin in Pickens County, AL on January 25, 1922. He attended Palmetto School. He was drafted in 1942 for World War II and served his country until 1945 as an anti-tank gunner in battles in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Service Ribbon with three bronze stars and a World War II Victory Medal while being a part of the 95th Infantry Division – “Iron Men of the Metz.” On December 24, 1949, he married Mary Allan “Mott” Browning. He attended Mississippi State University, worked at Johnson Tombigbee and was an initial hire at American Bosch, later United Technology. He retired in 1987 as a supervisor after working there for 34 years. Mr. Junkin was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a proud supporter of the National Rifle Association. He farmed, raised hay and cattle, enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and woodwork. Mr. Junkin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 56 years, his sisters, Mary Lou (Denmon) Stokes, Zelma Lee Junkin, Bertha (Russell) Bryant, Vergie B (Scott) Gee; and brother, Nathan (Reba) Junkin. Mr. Junkin is survived by – one son, Richard Clinton Junkin and his wife Deborah, Columbus, MS; four daughters – Olivia J. Sansing and her husband David, Columbus, MS, Nancy Junkin of Ackerman, MS, Robin J. Minton and her husband Roger of Reform, AL and Renee J Spinks and her husband Jim of Florence, AL. Seven grandchildren – Allison Danielle Minton Jaynes and her husband Bubba, Penny Leigh Sansing Mansell and her husband John, Henry Brad Minton and his wife Brooke, Joshua David Sansing and his wife Britney, Alexa Nichole Junkin, Andrew Clinton Junkin, Taylor Browning Spinks. Five Great-grandchildren – Elizabeth “Libby” Allan Jaynes, Millie Claire Jaynes, Swayze Scout Sansing, Harper Laine Minton, Arleigh Olivia Mansell. Three sisters-in-law, Bettye B. Loftis and her husband Robert Lee, Edith Browning and Elizabeth Browning. And a Host of Nieces and Nephews who will cherish memories with Uncle Clinton. Pallbearers were Brad Minton, Josh Sansing, Andrew Junkin, Taylor Spinks, Bubba Jaynes, John Mansell, Mark Oswalt and Ronnie Oswalt. Honorary pallbearers were Betty and Ray Crane, Ronnie Colburn, Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Still Hunting Club and Department 15 of United Technology.
