GORDO, Ala. — Bernice Ottice Powell, 102, died March 23, 2009, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services are today at 11 a.m. at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel in Reform, Ala., with the Rev. David Singleton officiating. Burial will follow at Gordo City Cemetery. Visitation is today for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Mrs. Powell was born June 20, 1906, in Gordo to the late Richard and Parrie Carver Lancaster. She attended Gordo First Baptist Church and was a member of Vota Vita Sunday school class. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Virgil Powell; son, Samuel S. Powell; and sister, Bertha Watkins. She is survived by her daughters, Bernice Comerford of Reform, Sabra Nelson of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Mary Parham of Marietta, Ga.; sons, Gene Powell of Gordo, Ala., and Joe Powell of Tuscaloosa; sister, Opal Barnard of Marietta; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Memorials may be made to Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.
