CALEDONIA — Avie Lou Heard, 82, died June 6, 2019, at her residence. Services were Saturday at the chapel of Otts Funeral Home in Sulligent, Alabama, with Don Taggart, Harvey Coplin and Randy Kennedy officiating. Burial followed at Northington/Heard Cemetery. Visitation was Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Heard was born April 13, 1937, in Lamar County, Alabama, to the late Charlie Otts and Lucile Williams Otts. Avie attended school in Sulligent and was a member of Depriest Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen Lee. She is survived by husband, James B. Heard of Caledonia; daughters, Jeanine Browning of Caledonia and Lisa Stockman, Caledonia; brothers, Earlie Otts of Vernon, Alabama, and Jerry Otts of Sulligent; sisters, Emma Jane Jackson of Sulligent, Mildred Lowery of Sulligent and Hilda Nolen of Hamilton, Alabama; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Bob Vandevender MACON — Elzie “Bob” Vandevender, 91, died June 5, 2019, at his residence. Services were Saturday at the chapel of Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon with Gerald Butler officiating. Burial followed at Jackson Field Cemetery near Preston. Visitation was one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Cockrell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Vandevender was born March 25, 1928, in Winston County to the late Earnest Christopher and Mary Onie Patterson Vandevender. Bob attended Winston County schools and was formerly employed as a school bus driver, mechanic, cattleman and farmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pennsylvania Clark. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Allen of Hattiesburg and Wanda Kay Martin of Carthage; sisters, Christine Clark of Shuqualak and Earnestine Lee of Preston; brothers, Elvis Vandevender and Punk Vandevender, both of Preston, and Elvin Vandevender of Macon; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
