Mrs. Augusta Sparkman Nettles, 98, died Friday, May 18, 2009 at Elderly Care Center in Macon, MS. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 18, 2009 at 2 p.m.at Cooksville Methodist Church near Macon. Interment will be held in church cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday one hour prior to the service at the church. The family requests no flowers, please. Memorials may be made to Cooksville Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Peggy Simmons, 325 Paulette Rd., Macon, MS 39341. Cockrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Gusta Nettles was born June 21, 1910 in Cooksville, MS to the late James Edwin and Clara Bell Sanders Sparkman. Gusta was the oldest of eight children. She was married to the late Alba Lawrence Nettles of Ada, Oklahoma. Mrs. Nettles was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Mable S Watt and three brothers, Jake, Marvin, and Harold Sparkman. She is survived by her sister, Dixie S. Walker of Macon and brothers, Frank Sparkman of Coatopa, Ala and Eddie Sparkman of Macon, MS. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Gusta graduated from Cooksville/Paulette High School and MSCW. She managed a tea room in Jackson and Lerner Shops in Jackson and Waco, Texas. Later, she was employed by Noxubee County Human Services and worked there for the remainder of her career. She was an avid gardener, wonderful homemaker, and loved her community and especially her nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Homemaker’s Club, United Daughter’s of Confederacy, the Cooksville Methodist Church. Gusta was a dedicated member of her church and community serving where she was needed. Gusta will be remembered as a wonderful Christian woman who loved the Lord and her sister and brothers in Christ. The family would like to say a special thanks to her minister, church family, friends, Dr. Larry Morris, and her nurses and caretakers.
