BOARDMAN, OHIO – Andrew J. Vanish, 68, passed away late Tuesday morning, Jan. 7, 2014, at Valley Care Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio, following a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends. Andrew, who was known to many as “Unk,” was born April 23, 1945, in Kennedy, Alabama, a son of the late Andrew J. and Mary McAdams Vanish, and was raised in Millport, Ala., and in Youngstown. Mr. Vanish was a graduate of Poland Seminary High School in Ohio, where he excelled in math, and subsequently attended Youngstown University. He worked at Republic Steel in Ohio for 32 years, where he retired from the seamless pipe mill. Andy was an excellent pool player and was an outstanding bowler, rolling several perfect 300 games. He enjoyed playing golf, listening to jazz, and loved going fishing with his “special buddy,” his nephew, Seth Dlwgosh. He was a long-time member of the Keystone Wellness “family” and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 513 on South Avenue in Youngstown, where he rarely missed a Tuesday Bingo Night with his sister, Janet. Mr. Vanish was an avid University of Alabama football fan, and enjoyed visiting New Orleans with his cousin, Peyton Bobo of Millport. Andy loved his family more than anything, and was always taking care of them. He is survived by two sisters, Mary (Bruce) Williams of Golden, Colo. and Janet Hanson Stewart of Poland, Ohio; his nephews he helped raise, Mark (Michelle) Hanson of Groton, Conn. and Scott Hanson of Poland; many other special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; his beloved dogs, Jake and Ella; and his cat, Precious. Andy was a very loving, compassionate, caring man, who did his best to help everyone. He was very much loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, William L. and Deidre E. Vanish, and Andy’s grandparents, Andrew and Mary Bender Vanish of Youngstown and L.K. and Luna Bobo McAdams of Millport, are deceased. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
