Allene M. Springer
Mrs. Allene Springer, 77, of Starkville died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. Services are at 11am Friday, March 27, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Starkville. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Thursday at First Baptist Church Outreach Center. Interment will be at Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville. Mrs. Springer was born in Union County on August 4, 1931. She spent most of her childhood in Houston, MS and graduated from Houston High School. She received her bachelor’s degree at Mississippi State College for Women and her master’s at Mississippi State College. Mrs. Springer began her teaching career in Houston, MS and then taught 15 years at Overstreet School. She was also a teacher and longtime elementary principal at Starkville Academy. Following her retirement, she taught part-time in the Elementary Education Department at Mississippi State. Mrs. Springer was a member of the Hic-asha- ba-ha chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as the Chapter Regent, Vice Regent and Historian. She was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as Chapter President, President of the Northern District, and was named a Woman of Distinction. In 1999, she received a Circle of Excellence Award given by Mississippi State University’s College of Education. She joined First Baptist Church in 1955 and was a member of the Joy Sunday School class. Mrs. Springer was preceded in death by her parents Robert Samuel and Zilda Gladney Mitchell. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Edward; four daughters, Carol Springer- Kelly of Houston, TX, Cathy Kemp (Terry) of Starkville, Edie Gray (Ronnie) of Dallas, TX, Charlotte Cox (Holland) of Starkville; grandchildren Emily Lesley(Brian), Edward Kemp(Leah), Elizabeth Kemp, Susannah Cox, Sam Cox, Charlie Cox, Beau Cox, Mitchell Gray, Colin Gray, Mallory Gray, Celeste Kelly; and great-grandchildren Beckett and John Scott Lesley. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Children’s Building Fund. Welch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
