After weeks of no rain and the drought-like conditions that ensued, parts of Lowndes County received a substantial amount of rainfall on Monday. Other parts of the county were not as fortunate.
“”We received almost an inch-and-a-half of rain,” WCBI Meteorologist Will Simmons said. “The northern part of the county received the bulk of the rain. There was far less rain in the southwestern part of the county near Crawford.”
Simmons said the chances of rain are elevated for the next several days.
“There will definitely be rainfall across the Golden Triangle today ,” Simmons said. “We have significant chances of rain through Sunday.”
Although rain has moved into the area, the burn ban issued July 3 for Lowndes County is still in effect — at least temporarily.
“The rain we had yesterday was more widespread than what we’ve been having,” Lowndes County Fire Coordinator Sammy Fondren said. “I’m going to poll all the fire chiefs in the districts and see what they recommend. We can’t lift the ban for one part of the county. It’s an all or nothing ban.”
Should conditions be favorable for ban removal, the board of supervisors will have to approve a recommendation to lift the ban. The recommendation then would have to be approved by the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
