Columbus police have arrested a man investigators say set fire to a home and car early Saturday morning.
Tamarcus Montrel Thomas, 39, of 16th Street North, has been charged with two counts of felony arson, according to a Columbus Police Department press release. Thomas is accused of starting a fire at a house on the 700 block of 19th Street North at 3 a.m. Saturday and a vehicle on the 1200 block of Ash Street an hour later.
No one was reported hurt in either fire.
Columbus Fire and Rescue officials said the fire caused “major” damage in both incidents, which were about four blocks apart, the press release said.
Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said investigators are looking further at several suspicious fires and that there may be further charges. He also thanked CFR for its firefighters’ help developing the case and asked the public to be on the lookout for suspicious people in their area.
“The best eyes and ears we have are those that live in an area and know it well,” he said.
Thomas is in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center on $40,000 bond.
