Authorities have identified the pedestrian killed in a car accident on Highway 45 North Sunday night.
Freddie Hartley, 68, of Columbus, died after he was hit by a car at about 9:30 p.m., according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Merchant had pronounced Hartley dead at the scene but didn’t have an identification for him until Monday afternoon.
Hartley’s family contacted Merchant at about 1 p.m. Monday.
Mississippi Highway Patrol officers responded to the call about the accident Sunday night and are still investigating how it happened. According to reports, Hartley had been walking in the middle of the highway when he was hit.
The driver, a 21-year-old from Florida, is not facing criminal charges in the accident.
