LAGRANGE, Ga. — Five people are in custody and a sixth is wanted for a homicide in Georgia.
The LaGrange Police Department said it happened June 27 during an armed robbery attempt that ended with Javontay Carr, 24, of Columbus dead.
Carr was one of the people involved in the robbery attempt of three LaGrange store owners, Lt. Dale Strickland told the LaGrange Daily News .
“He was involved and according to them, he got in between the others who were shooting and the car, and they accidentally hit him,” Strickland said.
Carr was shot three times in the torso and transported to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to a LPD press release.
The armed robbery attempt included suspects acting like they were working on a vehicle, and the store owners were ambushed when they drove by, authorities said.
The investigation following the shooting led police to Columbus where they interviewed several people allegedly involved. According to police, Malcolm Jamal Holloway, of LaGrange, and Sellus Culvin, Anthony Morris and Christopher Jacobs, all of Columbus, were arrested on one count of felony murder. Culvin, Morris and Jacobs also face three counts of criminal attempt murder.
Through the interview process, investigators determined Holloway allegedly planned the armed robbery attempt but did not take part, Strickland said.
Pam Barker of Columbus was charged with tampering with evidence in connection to the case, according to the press release. Strickland said Barker’s vehicle was used in the robbery and that she had it repaired before investigators arrived.
“They shot their own vehicle as well, and she had taken that vehicle and had it repaired and actually hid it from Det. (Jeremy) Jones and I while we were in Columbus, Mississippi,” Strickland said.
Warrants are still outstanding for Antony ONeal, also of Columbus, he said.
Morris, Jacobs, Culvin and Barker are pending extradition to Troup County and more charges are possible.
Strickland said he doesn’t know if the crime was gang related, but the men involved in the robbery were part of the Vice Lords and Gangster Disciples gangs.
Strickland said the police department does not see many crimes of this nature where individuals from another state drive over to commit a targeted crime.
“It’s very rare and very unusual. In fact, I don’t know any case that we’ve had similar to that that we’ve solved,” Strickland said.
