Authorities have released the name of an Alabama man accused in an armed robbery in north Columbus over the weekend, even as police search for a second suspect.
Officers with the Columbus Police Department arrested Jeffery Dymont Collie, 37, of Aliceville, after they found him hiding under a house near the scene of an alleged armed robbery on 19th Street North.
The victim reported that as he was getting out of his vehicle to enter his home at about 3:45 a.m., two black men, both armed with handguns, approached him and demanded money, according to Assistant Police Chief Fred Shelton. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money and several items from the victim’s vehicle before demanding the victim go into his house. When the victim refused, one of the suspects shot at the front door of the house.
The victim’s wife, who was inside the home making sure the door stayed locked, called 911, Shelton said. When police arrived at the scene, they found the two suspects running.
No one was injured in the incident.
Collie is charged with armed robbery, shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His total bond has been set at $350,000. He is still in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
Police have not released any information on the second suspect. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call CPD at 244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
