A Columbus man is in jail for firing a pistol at a former romantic partner.
Deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Robert Smith, 27, of 1920 Ridge Road, Friday afternoon after he allegedly shot at a woman in a domestic dispute. The two got into an argument at Smith’s residence, said Det. Tony Cooper with LCSO. As the woman left and got into her vehicle — which also had a passenger — Smith allegedly fired a pistol at the vehicle.
The victims fled to Penny Ridge Grocery, and Smith followed. When he arrived, the victims got back into their vehicle and drove away again, with Smith chasing them on a motorcycle, Cooper said. During the chase, deputies caught up with Smith, pulled him over and arrested him on Ridge Road.
Smith was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and a slew of misdemeanors, including disobeying a traffic control devise, expired drivers license and no insurance. Cooper said more charges may follow.
No one was injured in the incident, authorities said.
Smith is still in custody in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His bond has not been set.
