Mothers throughout Columbus are invited to a special Mother’s Day Luncheon at the Sim Scott Community Center at noon Thursday.
The free event is open for any mother in the community to come, have lunch and fellowship. It’s the seventh Mother’s Day that state representative Kabir Karriem has put the luncheon together to honor mothers in the community.
“It’s an appreciation luncheon for mothers in the community,” Karriem said. “Sometimes mothers don’t get their just due being the first teachers of civilization. Sometimes mothers are neglected. This is … a small token to let mothers know we appreciate them for all they do. We want to encourage mothers to keep going and keep being strong in our community.”
It began as a way of showing appreciation to senior citizens who use the Community Center, said Karriem, who started the luncheon when he was a member of the Columbus City Council. Over the years, the luncheon has turned into a bigger event for mothers of all ages and which many people look forward to it, he said.
The event will include food from Helen’s Kitchen and gospel music.
“We want to encourage all the mothers to come out, eat some good food, fellowship with one another, and be encouraged,” Karriem said.
The event is free and open to the public.
To RSVP, contact Karriem at 662-400-0873. The event is sponsored by Helen’s Kitchen and the Columbus Lowndes Recreation Authority.
