WEST POINT — The Clay County Sheriff’s Department has been without a drug dog since the summer of 2014, but looks to acquire a new one soon.
The Daily Times Leader reports the county Board of Supervisors voted to establish a fund to accept donations for a K-9 unit at its meeting Thursday.
Sheriff Eddie Scott said the department had been focusing on drug trafficking recently, for which he said a K-9 unit was crucial.
He said the department already had a K-9 officer and that, in addition to drug tracking, the dog would also be used to locate missing person in the county.
Scott says it would cost about $10,000 to purchase a drug dog, but that some local business owners and community members had agreed to pitch in.
