For several weeks, a handwritten sign on the front door of Jones Restaurant has stated that the eatery is temporarily closed.
The downtown Columbus restaurant has been serving generous soul food portions for more than half a century in Catfish Alley.
Wesley Jones, who runs the business like his mother, Sallie Mae Jones, did before him, told The Dispatch on Wednesday his family is dealing with a medical issue. That is the reason for the temporary shutdown. However, Jones expects to have the restaurant’s door open again in late October, maybe early November.

The business is located at 219 E. Main Street. Its hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday. Monday is by appointment only. The phone number is 662-312-9429.
Two downtown Columbus restaurants are celebrating anniversaries.
Cafe on Main has been open a decade this month.
It was in 2005 that Peggy Strauss decided to open her eatery, which sits at the corner of Main and Fifth streets. Initially, she served people in the basement. She figured there would be 50 folks a day. Soon, a regular crowd grew to 60. Then 80. People sometimes stood in line. So eventually, Strauss moved the dining area to the first floor, where her meals and desserts are served today.
Of course, there is the sweet shop, too, which is right beside the cafe. Desserts of all kinds can be purchased there. It opens at 10 a.m., Monday through Friday. The cafe is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sunday.
The cafe employs roughly 20 people.
J. Broussard’s is celebrating its 15th anniversary next Thursday with a reservation-only, six course tasting dinner at its location on Fifth Street South. There will be music by Stormy Monday, a Starkville blues band. The menu includes black pepper fettucine, creole crawfish salad, chicken and andouille gumbo, shrimp creole, grillades and grits, and eclairs and cream puffs. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. and is $50 per person.
