Tori Harris spells “hint” in the practice round of the Lowndes County Homeschool Association Spelling Bee Wednesday at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. This is the first time that the homeschoolers have formed a group for a spelling bee, and 18 children participated. The first and second place winners will go on to the Lowndes County Bee, to determine who will go to the 2023 Mississippi Spelling Bee, which will be hosted at Mississippi University for Women. More than $16,500 was raised to sponsor the 2023 Bee. Lois Kappler, coordinator for the 2023 Mississippi Spelling Bee, recently reported that a total of 239 schools have enrolled in the Bee, state-wide. That’s up from 211 in 2022.
