A New Hope man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Daniel Brownlee, 61, was driving his Ford F-150 pickup south on Casey Lane about 2:30 p.m. when he lost control at the intersection of Lake Lowndes Road and went into some trees, Merchant said.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said the truck caught fire when it struck the trees, and some passersby stopped and pulled Brownlee out of the truck.
“He was already out of the truck by the time we got there,” Hawkins said.
Brownlee was taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Merchant said, and then airlifted to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He died at UAB about 8:30 Monday night.
“We think he had a medical condition that caused the wreck,” Hawkins said.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, Hawkins said.
