CLAY COUNTY — A Cedar Bluff woman has been arrested and charged with exploiting a vulnerable adult, according to Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott.
Lori Chandler, 47, was working as a caregiver when family members determined something wasn’t right and contacted the authorities, Scott said.
“(Chandler) had gotten herself on some land deeds, possibly gotten some money,” Scott said. “We’re not sure of the extent of it yet. We’re waiting on some subpoenas to come back, but we had enough to make the initial charge.”
Once the family started looking into the situation “they saw some stuff missing and it snowballed,” Scott said. “They started checking and one thing led to another.”
Chandler worked as an individual caregiver and not at a nursing home, Scott said.
She turned herself in on Nov. 16 and bonded out that same day, Scott said. Bond was set at $5,000.
“We want to caution family members to be observant,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing, Scott said. Investigators ask anyone with information to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (662) 494-2896, Golden Triangle Crimestoppers at (800) 530-7151, or via the P3 smartphone app. Tips are anonymous, and if a tip leads to an arrest there is a cash reward.
