Starkville firefighters work Wednesday afternoon to extinguish a fire at a three-unit rental house at 204 South Washington St. across the street from First Baptist Church. Three tenants were present when the fire started at about 3:20 p.m., and while the renters all got out safely on their own, firefighters rescued a dog named Stone from the burning structure once they arrived, according to Mark McCurdy with SFD. The house was a total loss, but McCurdy said firefighters contained the fire and kept it from reaching adjacent structures. The cause is not yet determined. Zack Plair/Dispatch Staff
