The Confederate monument that formerly stood on the Lowndes County Courthouse lawn at the corner of Fifth Street and Second Avenue North in Columbus has been relocated to Friendship Cemetery, where it overlooks Civil War gravesites. It was disassembled and removed from the site where it had stood for over a century last May. The statue was reassembled over the last week, said Lowndes County Board of Supervisors President Trip Hairston, and finished up Tuesday. Hairston said $150,000 was budgeted to move it, but “all the tickets” weren’t in yet and he couldn’t say what the final cost was. Brian Jones/Dispatch Staff
