The Commercial Dispatch’s 100th anniversary is being recognized at the state level.
The Mississippi House of Representatives passed a concurrent resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of The Dispatch and recognizing its contributions to the community and state.
Sponsored by Rep. Dana Underwood McLean (R, Columbus), Rep. Kabir Karriem (D, Columbus) and Rep. Lynn Wright (R, Columbus), the resolution was adopted by the House Sunday and has been sent to the Senate to be adopted. The resolution passed unanimously in the House.
Inspired to create this resolution after seeing The Dispatch’s 100th anniversary edition, McLean said she knew this event needed to be commemorated because it is not only a legacy for Columbus, but all of the Golden Triangle.
The newspaper celebrated its centennial March 12.
“Congratulations to the Imes family on the 100th anniversary of The Commercial Dispatch,” McLean said. “The Dispatch has always been an integral part of our community, and I’m honored to be a sponsor of the House resolution commemorating this special occasion.”
The Senate previously passed a concurrent resolution commemorating The Dispatch’s anniversary and has been returned for enrolling. This resolution contained technical errors such as titling The Dispatch, “The Columbus Commercial Dispatch,” and saying the paper’s origin date was 1921 and not 1922.
Copies of the House resolution will be sent to Peter Imes and the staff of The Dispatch, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Columbus and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
