A fight involving a crowd of teenagers in Crawford Monday night resulted in one victim being shot in the stomach, according to Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the fight at about 8 p.m. and learned someone had been shot. The male victim was taken by personal vehicle to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle with non-life-threatening injuries, an LCSO press release said.
Investigators aren’t clear if the victim took part in the fight, but witnesses said several shots were fired. The victim told investigators he did not know who shot him and the shots came from the crowd.
No arrests have been made, but the press release said investigators are processing the crime scene, as well as canvassing the area for video surveillance and other witnesses. LCSO also is asking for the public’s help in identifying suspects.
“This gun violence needs to stop. This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have resulted in the death of this victim,” Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said in the release. “These young men seem not to be able to settle differences without shooting. These teens should not have access to firearms.”
Anyone with information on the incident can submit an anonymous tip to LCSO at 662-328-6788, Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 800-530-7151 or through the P3 Tips app using the QR code. Tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for a cash reward.
