Two Columbus men are charged with murder in the December shooting death of Lamaceo Smith at the Columbus Heights apartment complex.
Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies arrested Monta Deshun Harris, 41, and Tommy Earl Dora Jr., 28, on Thursday, on misdemeanor charges following a search of a residence, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said. The murder charges were added Friday.
Deputies responding to a shots-fired call found Smith, 22, lying in the road near the apartment complex at about 7:35 p.m. Dec. 21. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
A sheriff’s office press release issued Friday said multiple witnesses told investigators the two suspects were in a verbal altercation with Smith when Harris shot the victim.
Hawkins said more charges are forthcoming in the ongoing investigation.
Harris and Dora are being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. Their bonds are set at $500,000 each.
