STARKVILLE — A Florida man and his dog are dead after a fatal car accident near Cornerstone Park early Wednesday.
Anthony Rehm, 26, of Florida was traveling south on Highway 25 North when his vehicle left the roadway and flipped, hitting the new Cornerstone Park sign and coming to rest in the woods several hundred feet from the roadway, Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt said. Both the driver and his dog were ejected from the vehicle during the accident and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Hunt said the accident likely happened between 3:30 and 6 a.m. Construction workers for the new sportsplex at the park found the vehicle at about 7 a.m. after they noticed damage to the sign.
Rehm had been working in Oklahoma, Hunt said, and was driving home to Florida.
“The accident is still being investigated, but it looks like he probably went to sleep at the wheel,” Hunt said.
No other vehicles were involved and there were no witnesses, Hunt said.
