A Columbus man asleep in his living room Sunday morning awoke to noises he thought was his cat.
It was actually an armed robber who entered the home and forced the victim to drive him to an ATM and get the suspect cash, according to a press release from Columbus Police Department.
Police believe a Black male, armed with a gun, entered the home on Seventh Street South through an unlocked garage door. The victim complied with his assailant’s demands, taking the suspect to a local ATM and withdrawing an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim then dropped the suspect off in the 500 block of Fifth Avenue South and called the police at 4:30 a.m.
No one was injured in the incident, the press release said.
Police are still searching for the suspect, described as medium build and in his 20s. He was wearing dark clothes and a maroon gator neck mask on his face at the time of the robbery.
Investigators have requested videos in both the Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue South neighborhoods as part of the city’s partnership with the Ring doorbell surveillance company.
“Anyone with surveillance cameras in the areas of the 400 block of Seventh Street South and the 500 block of Fifth Avenue South is asked to call (Golden Triangle) Crime Stoppers at 800-530-7151,” Police Chief Fred Shelton said in the release.
