Mississippi Department Education’s Literacy Leadership Team recognizes Columbus Municipal School District’s Franklin Academy as one of the first Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading Schools on Tuesday. Students in pre-kindergarten and first grade attended the ceremony, as did members of the CMSD administration. The recognition is for schools that have trained teachers in the science of reading, exemplified a change of instruction practices and embodied a school culture that focuses on building skillful, strong readers in kindergarten through grade 3. The school received a banner marking its achievement. Principal Kennetra Smith received a book from the Literacy Leadership Team. The literacy team also recognized Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary School in the Starkville-Oktibbeha School District on Tuesday. Nicole Bowman-Layton/Dispatch Staff
