A man arrested near the scene of a weekend shooting faces a felony charge for fighting a Lowndes County sheriff’s investigator.
Jakolby Brooks, 21, is charged with simple assault of a law enforcement officer.
Deputies were investigating a shooting scene on Swedenburg Circle where a person was killed and another injured at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday, when a detective photographing the area noticed a Black male, later identified as Brooks, sitting in a vehicle nearby, according to a sheriff’s office press release. The detective also noticed Brooks had an AR-style rifle in the seat beside him inside the vehicle.
The detective made contact with Brooks, who refused to cooperate, the press release said. Brooks eventually exited the vehicle and was speaking with the detective, but then attempted to get back into the vehicle with the firearm.
The detective grabbed Brooks’ wrist to keep him from re-entering the vehicle, and Brooks punched the officer three times in the face with a closed fist, the release said. After a scuffle, Brooks got up from the ground and away from the detective before another deputy arrived and apprehended him.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch on Wednesday the incident was unrelated to the fatal shooting in which Quinshawn Dewayne Lucious, 22, was killed. Brooks is neither a suspect nor person of interest in that shooting, Hawkins said.
Brooks is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center with bond set at $25,000.
