Two sports writers for The Dispatch earned top-10 spots in multiple categories in the Associated Press Sports Editors Contest for work they produced in 2020.
They competed against sports writers from across the nation.
Ben Portnoy, who served as The Dispatch’s beat writer for Mississippi State athletics in 2020, placed second among 48 entries in beat reporting, seventh (of 56) in game story and eighth (of 45) in explanatory story.
Theo DeRosa, who was The Dispatch’s high school sports reporter in 2020 before taking over as MSU beat reporter earlier this year, tied for third (of 14) in the projects category, tied for seventh (of 59) in short feature and placed 10th in explanatory story.
The Dispatch competed in the Class C circulation division, which included publications such as The State in Columbia, South Carolina, The (Bloomington, Indiana) Herald-Times; the Green Bay Press-Gazette; The Commercial Appeal in Memphis; The Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York); and The Roanoke Times in Virginia.
