Area pharmacies have started providing COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 12-15, although the Mississippi State Department of Health has yet to make the vaccine available to people in that age group.
This week, national pharmacies Walgreens and CVS, along with Kroger pharmacies, announced the vaccinations for those in the 12-15 age group will be provided at its locations in the state.
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Pfizer vaccine for the age group on Monday.
Liz Sharlot, a spokesperson for the Mississippi State Department of Health, said Wednesday that vaccinations for children ages 12-15 were not available at MSDH vaccination sites “at this time” but pointed out that MSDH has scheduled a press conference for this afternoon, at which time any updates about the department’s vaccination program will be announced.
The last time MSDH opened vaccine eligibility to another age group was on March 16 when it made vaccinations available for anyone 16 or older.
As of Wednesday, MSDH reported that 1,780,904 doses of the vaccine have been administered with 846,645 Mississippians now fully vaccinated.
Appointments for vaccinations can be made online at: walgreens.com, kroger.com and cvs.com.
