Columbus police are investigating an incident at Walmart in which a woman was apparently sprayed with some sort of chemical.
Police Chief Fred Shelton told The Dispatch officers were called to the Walmart on Highway 45 Monday night where a woman shopping reported she had been attacked. She told police a man approached her in the store and appeared to “discharge some kind of chemical in her direction,” Shelton told The Dispatch. She felt light-headed walking to her car, so she called 911.
The woman reported she saw the man she thought sprayed her approaching her again, and when she walked up to police, he walked by her.
Shelton said officers who responded talked to several men at the scene, but they did not find any evidence such as spray bottles.
Shelton said the victim was treated and released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.
“We still don’t know exactly what it was, but she did get treated,” Shelton said.
The case is still under investigation. Shelton said if the perpetrator is arrested, he will likely be charged with assault.
