Police are searching for a suspect after a Columbus man was killed in a shooting near the intersection of Seventh Avenue North and 22nd Street Monday.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant identified the victim as Tarcari Tyshun Walker, 24. Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said Walker was shot Monday at about noon after apparently arguing with the driver of a red or maroon jeep in the street.
Walker’s body will be sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Pearl for autopsy.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim on the porch of a nearby home, where they began to perform CPR, Police Chief Fred Shelton and Columbus Public Information Officer Joe Dillon said. E-911 dispatchers also gave investigators a description of the jeep.
“We believe the jeep driver shot the victim while they were in the street,” Shelton said in the press release. “We believe the victim and the suspect knew each other since the victim freely walked up to the jeep.”
Shelton previously told The Dispatch the suspect is a Black man driving the jeep who fled the scene heading north on 22nd Street. He asked anyone with information on the case to call Columbus Police Department at 662-244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 800-530-7151.
