The city of Columbus is calling for volunteers to join in a citywide cleanup event Saturday morning.
The event, titled “Clean Up Columbus,” calls for volunteers from all civic organizations, social clubs, students and senior citizens to participate, Mayor Robert Smith told The Dispatch on Tuesday. Multiple organizations, such as the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Keep Columbus Beautiful and Lowe’s, have donated trash bags for the event, he said. Gloves will also be provided.
Gathering locations are spread across the city’s six wards and volunteers can contact the council member in their ward. For those who can’t make it to the locations, Smith said they can clean up trash from their own neighborhood and place the trash bags on the curb for public works employees to pick up later in the day.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon and free lunch will be served at the Municipal Complex afterward. There will be enough lunch to feed 250 to 300 people, Smith said. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water on their own.
