Business Moves with Mary: Columbus Tuesday Morning starts store closing sale

By Mary Pollitz • July 30, 2020

Mary Pollitz

The Tuesday Morning store in Columbus is officially closing.

Earlier this year, that national chain announced it declared bankruptcy due to financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, Tuesday Morning announced plans to close 230 of its 687 locations, and the Columbus store was not among the initial list. In the company’s press release in May, it announced a second wave of store closures would be released at a later date.

According to the Tuesday Morning website, the Columbus store at Jackson Square announced its store closing sale with “huge savings.”

As of now, the Columbus store is the only Mississippi store among the second wave of store closures.

The Dispatch could not reach Tuesday Morning representatives by press time. Tuesday Morning isn’t the first big-box retailer to shutter a large majority of (if not all) stores due to COVID-19. In recent months, so have JCPenney, Pier One Imports, Macy’s, Gordman’s and GNC, among others.

Moving on, there is some good news for Columbus folks that love tasty tacos.

The Taco Amigo Taco truck is back in business as of Wednesday. After an axle malfunction last week, the Columbus taco truck briefly closed for about a week. Keep up to date with The Taco Amigo’s Facebook page for locations and times!

The Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce is holding a ribbon cutting for America’s Car-Mart, 3933 Hwy. 45. — just north of Carl Hogan Toyota — at 10 a.m. Friday. Car-Mart is hosting its grand re-opening Friday at noon with chances to win prizes and some free merchandise.

Moving to Starkville, Boardtown Pizza and Pints, 705 University Drive, Suite C, is expected to open in September.

Owner Tyler Klaas said this feat has not been easy with COVID-19 halting retail operations.

“It was tough to get permits approved,” Klaas said. “There was about a three-week period that we didn’t even have anyone on site. It’s been miserable.”

Safe to say, business has not been as usual. After leaving the restaurant’s location Tuesday afternoon, Klaas said he had more workers on site than he ever had. The September opening looks doable and he’s excited to get the ball rolling. For him, giving up or putting the project on hold was never an option.

“We bit off this cookie a long time ago,” Klaas said. “We just gotta put our foot on the gas pedal and hope for the best.”

Boardtown Pizzas and Pints will serve Mediterranean cuisine. With a brick oven imported form Naples, Italy, and various gyros and about 35 beers on tap, he’s hoping the community pulls together to make the new eatery successful.

“We really hope everyone comes out and supports us,” Klaas said. “That’s what our worries are. … It’s really going to be on the people who are (in Starkville) that will help us make it through this period.”

Be sure to keep up to date with Boardtown and show them some love on opening day.

Also in Starkville, a formal shop moved locations this month.

It’s a Date, previously located downtown, moved to its new location at 119 N. Montgomery St. on July 1. Owner Karol Crowder Brigham said the new space gives ample privacy and room for all customers.

“It’s more conducive to what we do,” Brigham said. “It’s a great space, we can do private appointments for bridal or pageants. … We’re just able to offer a private bridal and pageant experience.”

It’s a Date offers formalwear, wedding gowns, tuxedos, suits and more. For now, Brigham said that the store is only open by appointment only.

“It’s worked out,” she said. “You’re able to accommodate your customers with more attention because they come in by appointment and you’re able to focus on their needs. This actually works out better and makes the customer feel more tended to.”

If you’re interested in making an appointment with It’s a Date for a pageant, prom, wedding gown or need a new suit or tux, be sure to call 662-324-4889.

For those in the Golden Triangle, remember it’s tax free weekend this weekend.

Clothing, footwear and all school supplies that are marked under $100 per article are eligible to be purchased tax free. Starting Friday July 31 and Aug. 1, you can purchase shoes, hats, backpacks, paintbrushes, notebooks, pens, paper and more all without the 7 percent extra tacked on.
