A Starkville Academy graduate and daughter of a city alderman died Saturday as a result of injuries sustained in a plane crash in Oxford.
Lake Little, 18, was airlifted from the crash site to a Memphis-area trauma center where she passed away, Mayor Lynn Spruill told The Dispatch.
Little, a flight student and 2019 Starkville Academy graduate, was flying a Civil Air Patrol plane that crashed on the Ole Miss Golf Course at about 3:15 p.m., according to an emailed statement from a University of Mississippi spokesperson. The single-engine plane had been performing “touch-and-go” takeoffs and landings near the Ole Miss airport.
The statement said Little was the only person on-board and suffered serious burns from the crash. No one on the ground was injured. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted and will investigate the crash scene.
Little was serving as Starkville’s Miss Hospitality and was slated to begin classes at Southern Mississippi University in the fall.
Her father is Starkville Ward 3 Alderman David Little.
