A Columbus man has been arrested for manslaughter after the vehicle he was driving hit and killed a woman earlier this week.
Jonathan Jamahl Bardley, 29, of 2107 O’Leary Lane, has been charged in the death of Deanna Clark, 32. Clark died at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson just after 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant. Her death occurred hours after deputies with Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office found her lying on the ground, having been pinned between a car and a tree off Aileen Drive in north Columbus, according to a LCSO press release.
Merchant said Clark was outside, not a passenger in the car, when the vehicle collided with the tree.
Deputies initially responded to a call of shots fired just before midnight, the press release said, only learning on the way to the scene that it was a car wreck, not a shooting. By the time they arrived, Bardley had fled the scene. He later turned himself in to LCSO on Tuesday morning.
Clark was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle and later flown to UMMC, the press release said.
LCSO authorities declined to answer whether alcohol was involved in the incident.
LCSO is still investigating the collision.
Bardley is in custody at Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. His bond has not been set.
