A church building burned down late Tuesday night in Oktibbeha County.
Central Oktibbeha Fire Department responded to the fire at Union Hill Church on New Light Road just before midnight, Oktibbeha County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan said. He said by the time firefighters responded to the scene, the fire was fully involved, destroying the building.
“It was basically on the ground when we got there,” he said.
Rosenhan said while the building wasn’t in use and didn’t even have electricity, neighbors told firefighters they had been doing some work on it to renovate it.
No one was injured in the fire.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what started the fire, but Lt. Brett Watson said investigators have not yet been able to go into the building.
“We have no idea if it was arson or if it was lightning strike,” Watson said.
He added that while investigators have not ruled out arson, they have no evidence so far to suggest the fire was intentional.
